Blacksmith Shop
The Blacksmith Shop was an important role in the early American settlement. All metal tools, implements, building materials, and horse shoes were made by the Blacksmith. The Club has programs using fully functioning coal fired Blacksmith equipment for anyone wanting to learn the art of Blacksmithing. See information below for upcoming programs.
Program Information
Beginner Blacksmith Workshop is a 2 day (6 hours each) (9 am to 3 pm each day) program that includes facets of blacksmithing iron as it was done over a century ago. Participants will learn about the science surrounding blacksmithing, safety rules, tools and equipment historically used in blacksmithing, and the operation and maintenance of a coal fired forge. This is a beginner program designed to introduce participants to the joys of Blacksmithing and fabricating items from metal and iron.
This program is not for idle observers; Participants will be expected to interact during class sessions and participate in hands on activities.
Standard safety items- (eye protection, gloves, aprons are provided). All tools, materials and instructor oversight will be provided. Participants will receive pre-program instructions covering the type of clothes, shoes, etc. to wear, and suggestions regarding lunch and beverages.
The program costs $160 per person. This is a coed program available to individuals 14 years of age and up (14 and 15-year-olds must be accompanied by a participating adult). It is a great experience for couples, family members of multi-generations and individuals looking for an opportunity to take a step back in time and experience a part of history that was so important to the development of the world.
This is not heavy-duty work, but participants must be able to physically strike a hammer repeatedly, hold pliers/tongs, work in close proximity to a coal fired forge and repeatedly turn a forge blower handle.
